Supporting Emotional Well-Being Through Hormone Health
Changes in mood, increased anxiety, or symptoms of depression can be some of the most difficult aspects of hormonal imbalance. At Inner MD Hormone Health, we work with patients in Halifax and across Atlantic Canada, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador and Prince Edward Island to explore whether hormonal shifts may be contributing to these challenges and create individualized care plans to support both mental and physical health.
Hormones play a significant role in regulating mood and emotional well-being. During perimenopause and menopause, fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone may contribute to irritability, anxiety, or depressive symptoms. In men, low testosterone can also influence mood stability and energy levels, leading to fatigue.
It is important to recognize that mood disorders are complex and may result from a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. At InnerMD, we take a holistic, patient-centered approach to understanding your symptoms.
Increased irritability or emotional sensitivity
Heightened anxiety or restlessness
Persistent sadness or low mood
Loss of motivation or decreased interest in activities
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Disrupted sleep patterns linked to mood changes
Because these symptoms often overlap with other health concerns, we carefully evaluate each patient before recommending treatment options.
Hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone play an important role in brain chemistry and emotional regulation. When these hormones fluctuate or decline — such as during perimenopause, menopause, or andropause — they may influence mood stability, anxiety levels, and energy. For some patients, rebalancing hormones through therapies like menopause hormone therapy, testosterone replacement therapy, or personalized hormone care may support emotional well-being.
At Inner MD, we evaluate whether hormones are contributing to your symptoms as part of a broader, individualized care plan.
Our process is designed to provide safe, personalized, and thoughtful support for mood-related symptoms:
Comprehensive Intake – Share your health history, current symptoms, and goals through our secure intake form.
Virtual Consultation – A 30-minute session with Dr. Johnston to discuss your experience and potential contributing factors.
Lab Testing (If Needed) – Ordered when hormone levels may help clarify possible causes.
Personalized Treatment Plan – May include menopause hormone therapy, testosterone replacement therapy, personalized hormone care, or other evidence-based strategies.
Ongoing Follow-Up – Regular reassessment every 3–6 months until stable, with annual reviews once optimized.

Not always. Mood symptoms can result from many factors, including stress, life circumstances, and other medical conditions. Hormones may play a role, but they are only one part of the overall picture.
For some patients, personalized hormone therapy may be considered if imbalances are identified. However, care decisions are always individualized, and other treatment options may also be recommended.
Inner MD focuses on hormone-related care. If additional counseling or psychotherapy is needed, we may recommend working with other providers alongside your treatment plan.
Lab testing can provide valuable insights but is not required in every case. The need for labs will be discussed during your consultation.
